Teens Act Commentary
There are many needs in our Provo community. In 2013, only 22% of Independence High School seniors graduated (44 out of 203). At Provo High School only 80% of seniors graduated (307 out of 378).
In our Teens Act classes at Provo and Independence High schools we survey our students in order to track their demographics. During the 2014-2015 school year, 63% of our students were ethnic minorities and of that, 84% were Hispanic. 73% of our students were on the free or reduced lunch program. Many of our students were from low-income families with no college education or were from families that are new to the United States and our education system. Within Provo High School overall, 40% of students are on free or reduced lunch, while 73% of students at Independence High School are on free or reduced lunch (see Provo District Reports, October 2013). 31.8% of Provo is below the poverty line.
Low-income, ethnic minority students are less likely to be academically and psychologically prepared for college, are more likely to drop out the first year, and face social and language barriers associated with speaking a language other than English at home among other difficulties. We know that nationally the income gap between graduates and non-graduates is huge, and that this affects our students’ futures and their quality of life.
